Starfruit vs. Ancient Fruit: Which Should You Plant?
The Valley’s oldest argument has a happy ending: the two best crops in the game are teammates, not rivals.
Plant BOTH. Ancient fruit is the set-and-forget backbone: plant it once and it hands you a harvest every week, forever. Starfruit is the summer sprint: it makes the biggest wine in the game, but you are rebuying seeds every single planting. Give the greenhouse and the island to ancient fruit; give your summers and your cellar casks to starfruit.
1Why ancient fruit is your backbone
One ancient fruit plant costs you basically nothing (donate the Ancient Seed artifact to Gunther, then multiply seeds with a Seed Maker) and gives you a fruit every 7 days, forever, in the greenhouse or on Ginger Island. Fill the greenhouse with 116 plants and build 116 kegs, and here is the beautiful part: kegs take 6.25 days, fruit comes every 7. Harvest Monday, load the kegs Monday, wine pops Sunday, repeat. Two mornings of work a week for roughly 268,000g of Artisan wine from the greenhouse alone.
Since patch 1.6.3 the Traveling Cart no longer sells Ancient Seeds! The museum donation plus Seed Maker route is now the only way in. Also: every crop you run through a Seed Maker has a small 0.5% chance to spit out bonus Ancient Seeds, so start recycling early.
2Why starfruit is your summer sprint
Starfruit wine is the most valuable bottle in the game: 3,150g with the Artisan profession, before aging. The catch is that seeds cost 400g each at Sandy’s Oasis, and you pay that price on every single planting. That recurring seed bill is why experienced players save their big starfruit pushes for summer, and it is also why one cheap item earns a place in the plan:
- Unlock the desert. Finish the Vault bundles (42,500g) so the bus runs.
- Buy Deluxe Speed-Gro on a Thursday. Sandy sells it for 80g on Thursdays. Buy a lot.
- Plant on Summer 1 with the fertilizer down. Growth drops from 13 days to 9.
- Harvest and replant same-day on Summer 10 and 19. Your third harvest lands Summer 28.
- Keg everything normal-quality, and sell your gold and iridium fruit raw. That sounds backwards, so the tip below walks through the math.
That 80g fertilizer turns two harvests into three. On a 200-tile plot, the third harvest is worth about +550,000g in wine, a return we have not found anywhere else in the Valley at that price. If 80g is sitting in your pocket on a Thursday, this is where it belongs.
Machines do not care about fruit quality! An iridium starfruit makes the exact same wine as a normal one, so the star on the fruit is wasted the moment it enters a keg. Sell your iridium and gold fruit raw instead (an iridium starfruit is 1,650g with Tiller) and keg only the normal and silver fruit. You earn more and you save six days of keg time.
3The profession switcheroo
Can’t decide between Agriculturist (faster crops) and Artisan (+40% wine value)? You do not have to. The Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers re-rolls your professions for 10,000g. Farm all season as Agriculturist, stockpile your wine in chests, then flip to Artisan, sleep one night, sell everything the NEXT day, and flip back. The 20,000g round trip pays for itself once you are holding about 23 starfruit wines.
Sell the day AFTER you wake up as an Artisan. Anything already in the shipping bin on the night you switch gets the OLD prices. This mistake has ruined a lot of paydays.
4Endgame checklist
- Greenhouse + island: ancient fruit, one keg per plant.
- Summers: fertilized starfruit, three harvests.
- Overflow fruit: into dehydrators (new in 1.6, and they clear 4,160g per machine per day). Kegs first, dehydrators second, jars last.
- Cellar casks: starfruit wine only. Aged iridium bottles hit 6,300g each.
- Once a month: do the statue flip and cash out everything.
| Crop | Wine (Artisan) | Seed cost | Best job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starfruit | 3,150g | 400g every time | Summer sprints, cellar casks |
| Ancient fruit | 2,310g | ~0g | Greenhouse and island, forever |
