How to Get Rich in the Mines (Without Dying)

The mines are not a chore between farm days. Run with a plan, they are a 100,000g-a-day job with great scenery, and the plan is not complicated. This guide walks the whole operation, floor by floor.

★ Quick Answer

SMELT EVERYTHING, and sell nothing raw. Take Miner at level 5 and Blacksmith at level 10. Kill 500 Dust Sprites for the Burglar’s Ring, which doubles your loot forever. Then spend every max-luck day in Skull Cavern with staircases, bombs, and Spicy Eels: a practiced trip brings back about 300 iridium ore, and your furnaces turn that into roughly 100,000g. Everything else in this guide is detail on those four moves.

1The golden rule: bars, never ore

Every bar takes 5 ore and 1 coal, and every bar is worth WAY more than its ingredients. An iridium bar sells for 1,500g with Blacksmith against about 515g of inputs. Radioactive bars from the dangerous mines hit 4,500g, the priciest bar in the game. Furnaces are cheap (25 stone, 20 copper ore), so build a whole row of them; your bottleneck will always be ore, never furnaces.

⚠ Heads Up

Two traps catch new smelters. First, buying coal from Clint at 150–250g makes copper smelting LOSE money, so farm your coal instead (step 3). Second, transmutation recipes look clever and are not: turning copper bars into an iron bar loses 60g every single time.

2Pick the money professions

  1. Level 5: take Miner. +1 ore from every vein, roughly +50% ore volume, and it applies to Skull Cavern iridium too.
  2. Level 10: take Blacksmith. All metal bars sell for +50%. Together the pair multiplies your smelting income by about 2.25×.
  3. Way later: once you own a wall of crystalariums, pay the Statue of Uncertainty 10,000g and switch to Geologist then Gemologist. Diamond machines pay 195g each per day while you fish. Mine as a Blacksmith, retire as a Gemologist.

3The 500 Dust Sprite grind (do this early!)

Gil at the Adventurer’s Guild gives you the Burglar’s Ring for slaying 500 Dust Sprites, and it is the best loot item in the game: the drop table rolls TWICE on every kill, forever. The grind is friendlier than it sounds. Dust Sprites live on floors 41–79, die in one hit, and drop coal half the time, so the same kills that earn the ring also stock the coal your furnaces run on. Loop the elevator (55, 65, 75, exit, repeat) and you can bank about 150 coal a day once the ring is on.

★ Pro Tip

The ring does NOT stack with a second Burglar’s Ring, so never forge two together. It DOES stack with the Monster Compendium book (+3% double loot) and Monster Musk (double spawns). That trio is the community’s famous quadruple-loot stack.

4The Skull Cavern payday run

  1. Wait for a great-luck day (Fortune Teller: “the spirits are very happy”).
  2. Pack the kit: 30–50 staircases, 20–30 bombs, Spicy Eels (+1 Luck +1 Speed, 1 ruby each at the Desert Trader), a Triple Shot Espresso, and a farm warp totem.
  3. Warp to the desert at 6am and dive. Staircase through bad floors, bomb the ore clusters, and take every shaft down.
  4. Ignore monsters unless they are made of iridium (Iridium Bats, ~380g a kill with the ring) or wearing Cloth (Mummies, ~350g).
  5. Warp home by 1:50am. Passing out costs up to 1,000g plus your morning.

Practiced runs bring back about 300 iridium ore, and the pros report 700–900. Smelted with Blacksmith, 335 ore becomes 67 bars and about 100,000g, all from a single lucky day. Very little on a farm pays that rate, which is why this guide keeps telling you to save your luck days for the desert.

★ Pro Tip

Staircases cost 99 stone each OR one jade at the Desert Trader on Sundays. Park a few jade crystalariums and your staircase habit funds itself. Diamonds carry the bigger sticker price, but once you are trading for staircases, jade buys depth, and depth is iridium: for a Skull Cavern runner it is the most useful gem in the game.

5Bonus rounds

Dangerous mines: finish Qi’s “Danger In The Deep” order and flip the Shrine of Challenge for radioactive ore (that 4,500g bar) plus a magic mushroom forest on floors 41–49 where Botanist forage picks at iridium quality; a Purple Mushroom sells for 500g. Desert Festival (Spring 15–17): Skull Cavern pays DOUBLE for three days; every rock also drops Calico Eggs on top of normal loot, Gil pays up to 500 eggs a day for depth, and 1,000 eggs buys Robin’s Furniture Catalogue, a 200,000g item. Eat the festival Chef’s meals first; their buffs stack with everything.

⚠ Heads Up

Festival fine print: the Calico Statues can curse you (one takes HALF your eggs if you get knocked out), and every unspent egg vanishes when the festival ends, even from chests. Spend to zero on day three!

The full audit lives at The Gem Sea Journal: complete drop tables, expected-value math per monster, crystalarium yields, and the festival ledger. They call the Dust Sprite grind “an investment thesis with 500 casualties.” Incredible stuff.
