Don’t Sell Your Pigs This Winter (Do This Instead)
A popular money trick says: pigs do nothing in winter, so sell them high and rebuy piglets in time for spring. Here is why that torches half a million gold.
KEEP THE PIGS. Selling a loved-up herd and rebuying piglets does net you around +70,000g over the winter, so the trick is not imaginary. The problem is that your new pigs start at zero hearts and spend all spring finding far fewer truffles, which costs you up to 515,000g of truffle oil. The whole scheme comes out about −443,000g behind simply holding the herd. Pet them, feed them, and wait for spring.
1Why the trick sounds good
It is true that pigs will not go outside in snow, so they find zero truffles all winter. It is also true that Marnie pays about 19,000g for a well-loved pig you bought for 16,000g, and that a piglet bought on Winter 18 is grown by Winter 28. Sell twelve, run cheap cows for cheese in the empty barn, rebuy in time for spring: on paper you pocket about 70,000g. We get the appeal!
2Why it actually burns you
Truffle production scales with hearts. A max-hearts pig averages about 3 truffles per sunny day. A brand-new pig? About 1. Your rebuilt herd spends all of spring climbing back up, averaging about 1.4 truffles a day, and across twelve pigs and eighteen sunny days that gap is roughly 346 missing truffles. As Artisan truffle oil, that is over half a million gold you never see.
| The winter swap, all-in | Gold |
|---|---|
| Selling high, rebuying piglets | +36,000g |
| Winter cow-cheese side hustle | +35,600g |
| Spring truffles your new herd never finds | −515,000g |
| Total vs. just keeping the pigs | −443,400g |
Hearts come back fast on a herd you KEEP: pet your pigs indoors every winter morning and a 4.5-heart herd hits max hearts within about a week. Your reward is a monster 3-truffles-per-pig spring from day one.
3What to do with winter instead
- Want cheese money? Ask Robin for a second barn (25,000g plus 550 wood and 300 stone) and run cows year-round. It pays for itself in one avoided spring.
- Keep the pig routine: pet daily and keep the hay stocked. Those hearts are what your spring truffle income is made of.
- Spend the season in Skull Cavern, the greenhouse, or fishing. Winter is the best mining weather of the year.
