When Should You Plant Mixed Seeds?

Mixed seeds are free, they sell for 0g, and the crop inside is decided the second the seed touches dirt. That makes WHEN the entire question, and the answer swings one seed’s value from 0g to over 1,000g.

★ Quick Answer

On the mainland: SUMMER, and plant all month long. A day-1 summer seed averages 271g, and summer is the only season where a seed can never die, because corn and wheat survive into fall. Fall is nearly as good through day 14 and a guaranteed loss from day 24. Spring averages a sad 95g, because the game secretly doubles your odds of rolling a parsnip. The real answer once you repair the boat: plant every mixed seed on GINGER ISLAND, where seeds ignore seasons, roll premium fruit, and average about 1,081g each. The seeds never expire, so holding them costs you nothing but patience.

1How the gamble works, in sixty seconds

A mixed seed has no crop inside it. The game rolls one from the current season’s pool at the moment you plant: parsnip, potato, or cauliflower in spring; corn, hot pepper, radish, or wheat in summer; artichoke, corn, eggplant, or pumpkin in fall. The rolls are even odds with one rigged exception: spring on your farm rolls parsnips at DOUBLE weight, which is why spring is the worst month in the game for these. Winter shuts the mainland down completely; outdoor planting is simply not allowed. And the best mainland roll is not the pumpkin you might expect: a summer corn regrows every 4 days, survives into fall, and pays 605g from a free seed.

2The planting calendar

  1. Year 1 spring: plant on sight. Yes, spring only averages 95g, but early gold compounds into seed money, and 95g on day 3 of a new farm beats 271g five weeks from now.
  2. Every summer: plant everything, all month. Even a seed planted on Summer 28 returns 62g, because corn and wheat cannot die. Summer has no bad days.
  3. Fall: plant through day 14 only. Corn busts after day 14 and pumpkin after day 15, and from day 24 every fall planting is a guaranteed zero. A late-fall planting is worse than not planting, because it also wastes the seed.
  4. Winter: hold the bag. The mainland is closed, and the seeds never expire. Which brings us to the island.
  5. After the boat: everything goes to Ginger Island, forever. Island dirt ignores seasons entirely.
★ Pro Tip

Mixed seeds are the rare crop with a banking play. A seed you find in spring is worth 95g planted now and 271g held for Summer 1, a +186% return for doing nothing. From Year 2 on, a chest labeled “summer seeds” is the right home for every packet spring drops on you.

3The island slot machine

Mixed seeds planted on Ginger Island ignore the calendar and roll from a premium pool instead: blueberry, melon, pineapple, or rhubarb, even odds. Island crops never die to a season change, so a rolled pineapple pays 330g every 7 days forever, and a rolled blueberry keeps producing forever too. One island seed averages about 1,081g, four times the best mainland month, and a quarter of your rolls become permanent plants you never touch again. The worst prize on the wheel is a 242g rhubarb. There is no mainland month that competes with this.

⚠ Heads Up

The greenhouse sounds like the same trick and is actually a trap. A winter greenhouse planting does roll from all seasons, but greenhouse tiles are the most valuable dirt you own: mixed-seed corn earns about 14g per tile-day on a tile where ancient fruit earns about 85g before kegs. Gamble on the island’s free dirt, never in the greenhouse.

4Krobus sells them every Thursday

Krobus stocks mixed seeds at 30g in the Sewers every Thursday, and whether that is a deal depends on the date. In summer, every single Thursday is a buy, from an 8.2× return on Summer 4 down to a still-solid 2.5× on Summer 25. In spring and fall the first two Thursdays are buys and the last one (the 25th) is Krobus charging 30g for a dead seed. Unless you are banking for summer or the island, in which case every Thursday of the year is a buy: 30g against a future 271g planting is a 9× trade.

★ Pro Tip

Two bonus uses worth knowing. Fall mixed seeds can roll an ARTICHOKE in Year 1, a full year before Pierre sells the seed; sixteen early-fall seeds give you a 99% chance of the one you need for Full Shipment. And 1 mixed seed + 5 sap + 1 clay crafts Fiber Seeds, which never need watering.

⚠ Heads Up

Three things mixed seeds will never do for you: giant crops (giants need a 3×3 of one crop, and random rolls cannot be clustered), the Fall Crops bundle’s yam (it is in no pool), and a quality-fertilizer play (free random seeds do not deserve Deluxe Fertilizer; ship what drops).
